people always leave - credit to chingching lee

read this from szeching's blog and i kinda like it. so i decided to reproduce it. and hence, i m obliged to direct you to her wonderful blog at http://www.sceleven.blogspot.com/
btw, ching posted this on 30th april 2010.

people always leave.

and i am one of those.
i realised i am always in and out of some people's lives.
come and leave as i want.
i know this is really bad but i have no choice.
after three years in pcghs, i had to leave to come here.
after two years in ijtp, i had to leave to go jc.
after two years in acjc, i had to leave to go uni.
maybe after a year, i have to leave.

again.

it's really frustrating because once you have create great friendship with people around you, you know that this is gonna end soon.
sometimes, you manage to continue that friendship even after so long, which is really great, but, most of the times, that is not the case.
i am glad to have a few of my childhood friends still with me, mijos, some fouroners, 6th and 21st.

i always wonder what would it be like if one day i am out of someone's life.
i hope i can go into the person's mind and see what he/she is thinking.
that would be really interesting.

but for now, let's just cherish all the times we have, k?
who knows one day i will continue my leaving habit.
and when that time comes, i wish that i have been a great friend, great company.
and i hope that i will be remembered, somehow.
just random stuff like, that's the girl who say stuff that other people don't understand and finds it amusing, or, oh that girl.
hahaha :D

Gone Too Soon: Tan Shyn Lyn

Saw on my facebook homepage that ivy joined the group 'gone too soon: tan shyn lyn' and curiosity got the better of me. so i clicked on the group and went to take a look.
the info there did not put away all my curiosity and i was still wondering what had happened. all my friends in spore were in the midst of exam, so i did not want to disturb them.

at buffet at bondi beach on sunday, heard from minwei that there was a msian girl from selangor who was studying in NUS (Spore) who committed suicide. she was in her final year and was going to graduate from dentistry within months. immediately, my thoughts linked this to the facebook group. there must be some correlation.

came back and did some research or rather web-surfing/browsing. more info surfaced and i drew all them together to explain certain situations and made my deductions which were later confirmed.

A fellow ASEAN scholar, even though she was a few years more senior than I was and I have not met her before, it is sad to know that such a bright, talented girl had taken her own life. I share her brother's sentiments that I am glad and proud that she had the courage to seek medical help for her depression in a society where seeking mental help can be stigmatised and laughed upon.

There is no proper explanation of why she has taken her own life and I do not attempt to make speculations. Rather, i think this tragedy sheds lights on how important support is for teenagers and young adults alike, especially those who are on a foreign land on their own. No matter how many years a person could have been living independently away from home, the hollow and lonely feeling still surface from time to time. There is no reason to assume that necessary and adequate care and support can be regarded as of less importance.

Hopefully, it is also a reminder to all of us to make that little effort to understand and listen to people around us, be it our friends, family members, relatives or just anyone who does not look like his or her usual self. There is so much that i would want to write, but i have no idea how to put them into words. this is a very sad tragedy, which probably could have been prevented.

I hope that shyn lyn's demise could be a wake up call for us to reflect on what could have been done and what should not have been done so that we can all prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Saving Andrew Mallard

Watching the documentary called "Saving Andrew Mallard" made me reflect on why I am studying law after all.

When I was young, I told my mum that I wanted to be a lawyer because I wanted to help people who are disadvantaged. Mum told me that being a lawyer often means helping the bad guy. Innocently, I said, I would help good guys who are just too poor and can't afford a lawyer. And mum said, then you won't get business to make money! Haha. How innocent was I.

People always say that money in the legal profession lies in the corporate area. People often ask if I am going to be a corporate lawyer in the future because I am studying commerce and law.

There is so much injustice in the world. Our society is not perfect, I admit it and I acknowledge that no one society can be perfect.

I guess I will just have to figure out what I want to achieve from my career and what are the possible trade offs.

strange + CEO

it is funny how at times when you are surrounded by many people, you still have this hollow feeling. it is like you are looking for someone, but you might not even know who you are looking for. it is a strange feeling that i have yet to find an explanation for.

anyway, attended the Meet the CEO - Mike Smith (CEO of ANZ) this evening at Scientia building.
the financial parts are a little too in-depth for me to fully understand. but points taken are:
- how do you pull through challenges? you never doubt yourself. you always believe that you will succeed and you will achieve what you want
- not everyone is ambitious

realized that china is really the big power now. dont need to think about a nation-wide china business. just a small city might be enough to generate decent profits. on another note, size of population might be important, but the wealth level of the people can make a huge difference too.
